Where the numbers come from, and how to read them
One source, consistent age groups. We use the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs’ World Population Prospects 2024 ↗, summing the single-age male populations at ages 30 through 35 and the single-age female populations at ages 20 through 25. These are UN estimates, not six independent census counts in every country: where census inputs use five-year age groups, the UN adjusts and smooths them, then graduates them to single ages. The ratio is men ÷ women × 100. Counts refer to 1 July of each year.
Historical estimates and a current projection. The 1990, 2000, 2010, and 2020 values are the UN’s reconstructed population estimates. The 2026 values use its medium projection. We do not extrapolate individual countries ourselves or substitute five-year bands for the six-year ranges shown here.
Comparable does not mean equally certain. UN estimates combine censuses, vital records, surveys, and demographic modeling. Countries with older censuses, conflict, or large migration flows can have greater uncertainty. These figures do not support precise claims about a particular city or neighborhood; small differences between countries should not be overinterpreted.
This compares two different generations. A lower ratio can reflect a larger younger generation, migration, and differences in mortality as well as the balance between sexes. The data classify population by sex and do not identify relationship status, orientation, or willingness to date someone in the other age group.
Your cutoffs apply to every year. The defaults are green below 95 men per 100 women, blue from 95 to under 105, and red at 105 or more. Drag either cutoff between 80 and 130 to change the map and table, or reset to the defaults. Colors use the ratio rounded to one decimal. These are comparison cutoffs, not statistical confidence intervals; a custom blue range does not necessarily mean parity. Shared page links preserve your cutoffs; separately published Datawrapper maps use the defaults. Counts are rounded to people; small territories can have very small age groups.
Geography over time. We show the UN’s country and area series on one present-day basemap, rather than recreating historical borders. The table includes only countries and territories with at least 50,000 men aged 30–35 in 2026, applying that fixed list to all years. This filter does not affect the map or CSV. Some small territories have data in the CSV but no separate polygon on the map. Gray means no matched data, not a balanced ratio.
