Where we can shoot in Seattle

A few picks from my Seattle dating photo location guide, which maps 68 spots with hours and notes. Pair a skyline or waterfront spot with a garden or an indoor backup; soft overcast works outdoors, and rooftops look best at blue hour.

  • Kerry Park (Queen Anne)

    Skyline viewpoints

Free. Postcard Needle skyline; mobbed at sunset. Weekday morning; frame tight so you stay dominant. Mid-tone jacket.

  • Golden Gardens Park (Ballard)

    Parks & waterfront

Free. Best true-sunset beach in town; west sand, driftwood, Olympics. Use north beach, not marina. Windy after 7pm.

  • Washington Park Arboretum, Azalea Way (Montlake)

    Gardens & conservatories

Free. 230 acres of soft green paths. Go-to Seattle greenery. Spring azaleas, fall maples; overcast works.

  • Kubota Garden (Rainier Beach)

    Gardens & conservatories

Free. Red Moon Bridge, ponds, maples. Bigger and quieter than the paid Japanese Garden. Cloudy, windless days.

  • Olympic Sculpture Park (Belltown)

    Parks & waterfront

Free. Calder's red Eagle, water, Olympics. Clean modern-art backdrop. No tracks/cranes; wear anything but red.

  • The Nest (Downtown)

    Rooftop bars/restaurants

Polished rooftop for Elliott Bay and Olympic sunsets. Walk-ins OK; premium-view seats cost extra.

Weather and the rain plan

Seattle has great shooting weather from May through September. The rest of the year, we either reschedule or move the shoot indoors, depending on how many days are going to be rainy. I always have a backup plan for a single rainy day.

Indoor spots from the guide that hold up in the rain:

  • Seattle Central Library (Downtown). Free. Glass atrium and geometric escalators. Skip the red hallway; it looks gimmicky in dating photos.
  • Volunteer Park Conservatory (Capitol Hill). About $6. Victorian glasshouse of palms and orchids. Reliable rain fallback.
  • Fairmont Olympic, lobby & Olympic Bar (Downtown). Main traditional luxury lobby: columns, chandeliers, polished stone. Use the central lobby, not corridors.
  • Elliott Bay Book Company (Capitol Hill). High shelves and wood floors. Shoot deep inside so it looks like a real bookstore, not a retail entrance.

Dating in Seattle

Seattle has more men than women among 20‑ to 34‑year‑olds: about 104 for every 100 women, or roughly 5,300 more men. Among those who have never married, it’s about 109 men per 100 women.

How we pick which photos are best

Scores come from Photofeeler, a site where real people blind-rate photos as Smart, Trustworthy and Attractive (each out of 10). You upload a photo, choose the audience (we pick women in your target age range) and 40 of them vote on it without knowing anything about you. The score is an average of those 40 votes. We use it the same way A/B testing works in tech: change one variable, measure, repeat.

What we changed

  • Haircut and beard shaping before we started shooting
  • Borrowed a suit that actually fits through the shoulders
  • Rooftop at golden hour instead of a barber shop mirror
  • Tried about 40 poses before this one clicked
  • 85mm lens so the background falls away clean
  • Picked this shot because it scored highest, not because it looked coolest to us
